Nvidia Corp Chief Executive Jensen Huang plans to visit China in the coming days ahead of the mid-February Chinese New Year, CNBC reported, citing two people familiar with the matter.
The trip comes as uncertainty continues over the U.S. chipmaker’s ability to sell in China, which once accounted for roughly one-fifth of revenue from Nvidia’s data center business. U.S. export restrictions have barred the sale of Nvidia’s most advanced chips to China, as Washington aims to maintain a technological edge in artificial intelligence applications.
During the visit, Huang is expected to attend an Nvidia company event in Beijing on Monday, one source said, speaking on condition of anonymity. He is also scheduled to meet potential Chinese buyers and discuss recent logistical hurdles in supplying U.S.-approved Nvidia chips to the market, according to another person familiar with the travel plans.
Last week, The Information reported that China would only allow local purchases of Nvidia’s H200 AI chips for limited purposes, such as research. When asked about the report, China’s Ministry of Commerce said Thursday that it was unaware of the situation.
Bloomberg first reported news of Huang’s China trip earlier this week. Nvidia declined to comment on executive travel plans. Huang visited mainland China at least three times last year, including January for Chinese New Year celebrations.
